Older Gore-tex jackets had a strong but potent DWR coating that had great Hydrophobic and Oleophobic qualities. The industry found out that these DWR coatings had highly fluorinated chemicals which is great for water repellency but bad for the environment. There has been a shift in the industry over the last 10 years for brands to do better for the environment, and most brands are committed to this.
The downside is that newer DWR coatings do not have great Oleophobic properties so this can cause oils, creams and other conventional liquids that we use on a daily basis get caught up in the material. This is why we recommend all of our customers wash their jackets regularly to ensure that the DWR is maintained.
